Abstract
GLM hourly flash rates are given for Amazon Basin domain (10ºN-22ºS, 35º-67ºW) and USA domain (18º-50ºN, 72º-104ºW) from June 2023-December 2024. This data is used as a label for training the lightning flash rate parameterization scheme, SEILER-Net.
Notes
Pre-processing for the GLM data is according to the SEILER-Net methods section (Seiler, 2026) (in-review). Only hours where there is at least one grid cell within the domain with a non-zero flash rate are included in the dataset. These flash rates are transformed using log base 10 (x+1).
For raw GLM data, use the following script to access 20-s GLM files from GOES-18 for Julian date 127, which corresponds to 20250507. The script creates the subdirectory 20250507 and 24 subdirectories under it with names 00, 01, 02, 03, ... 23. It then places up to 180 files in each of the hourly sub-directories: aws s3 sync --no-sign-request s3://noaa-goes18/GLM-L2-LCFA/2025/127/ 20250507/
