About DRUM
The Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM) is the digital archive for collecting, preserving, and providing access to works produced by university research. It is supported and developed by Digital Services and Technologies in the University of Maryland Libraries. There is no fee for using DRUM.
Submitting to DRUM
DRUM Submission Requirements:
- Submissions should be substantial works of research or scholarship.
- You should be the author or coauthor of the materials. You may submit only materials for which you hold the copyright.
- If you transferred rights to a publisher or another entity, you may need their permission to submit material.
Who can submit?
- All University of Maryland faculty members may submit materials to DRUM.
- If you are a graduate student, your thesis or dissertation will be automatically submitted to DRUM by the Graduate School. For all other materials, graduate students may submit to the repository with written permission from a UMD faculty member. Please email drum-help@umd.edu; copy your faculty sponsor and explain their relationship to your work to be given authorization to deposit in an appropriate DRUM collection.
- Undergraduates may submit materials including honors theses and research and capstone projects if invited to contribute to a specific community. Please reach out to drum-help@umd.edu to inquire or request permissions to deposit to a specific collection.
Depending on the nature or volume of your materials, the University Libraries may decline your submission. In this situation, we will make every effort to help you find a more appropriate repository.

Accessibility
The University of Maryland is committed to creating and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive educational and working environment for people with disabilities and to ensuring equal access to information and services for all its constituencies.
For those submitting materials to DRUM, information on how to ensure materials meet accessibility standards is available in the Creating Accessible DRUM Deposits LibGuide.
If you are having trouble accessing the content in DRUM and need it in an alternative format or have comments or suggestions on accessibility, contact itaccessibility@umd.edu. For more information about accessibility at UMD, visit the UMD Digital Accessibility website.
DRUM DOIs
All DRUM items receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), a unique link that provides persistent access to this item for the purposes of discovery and citation. DRUM submissions are moderated, and so DOIs are not automatically generated, but will be assigned once your submission has been reviewed, catalogued and published to the repository, usually within 2 business days of receipt.
Once your submission is published, you will receive an email that contains a link to your materials; this is not the DOI. A DOI for use in publications will be registered within 24 hours and can then be found on the item page for your work.
Copyright
Works in the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland are free to access but are protected by copyright with all rights reserved, unless otherwise indicated, as by a Creative Commons license.
The University of Maryland Libraries do not own the copyrights to works published in this repository and are unable to grant permissions to use works in the collections. Authors should be contacted directly to request permissions. Please note that the Libraries do not maintain contact details for all DRUM authors.
DRUM License
All submitters retain copyright over their work but must consent to the DRUM License. The License formally grants the University Libraries the rights needed to provide long-term stewardship and persistent access to research outputs. Read more information about your rights as an author and about giving non-exclusive rights to the University of Maryland so your work can be maintained in DRUM.
Deposit License Text
By signing and submitting this agreement, I grant the University of Maryland a no cost, nonexclusive right and license to include the scholarly material identified below in the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland ("DRUM") and, through DRUM, to reproduce, publicly display and distribute the material at no cost to users worldwide provided the University does not alter the content of the material.
I understand that if I wish to publish the material with a third party that requires me to assign to it all my rights in the material, I may direct the University to remove the material from DRUM. In such an event, I understand that a bibliographic reference to the material will be retained in DRUM, but the material will be removed to a "dark archive" that is not publicly accessible.
I represent that I am the sole or joint owner of the entire copyright in the material or the material is in the public domain. To the extent that I do not hold copyright in any part of the material, I have written authority from the owner of copyright to grant this license to the University of Maryland.
If the material is based on work that was sponsored or supported by an agency or entity other than the University of Maryland, I represent that I complied with any requirements the sponsor may have imposed on publication including a right of review or inclusion of an acknowledgement of its support.
This agreement will be interpreted and governed in accordance with applicable Federal law and the laws of the State of Maryland without reference to its conflict of laws rules.
