The theme of this performance dissertation, bassoon repertoire inspired by other art forms, highlights the intersection of classical music with popular music genres, art, literature, theater, and film. Each program highlights two other artistic areas, giving each recital its subtitle. The first, jazz and folk music, features music from a variety of cultures and popular music genres, including American jazz, African American spirituals, and traditional music from China, Ireland, and Bulgaria. The second, art and literature, features repertoire based around literary concepts, specific poems, and two visual artists. The final recital, stage and screen, includes musical theater, opera, and film. Many of the pieces on this recital fall into multiple categories, with the operatic works also featuring prominently in animated media in particular. This dissertation includes program notes for each piece performed.en_US
