Abstract
As schools in the United States face issues with overcrowding and chronic underfunding, many turn to portable classrooms as a cheap, quick, and temporary solution. To house its surging student populations, Maryland utilizes nearly 3,000 portables, chiefly in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. Despite widespread usage, the portable classroom typology is neglected by architects and investors, who instead focus on ground up construction or adaptive reuse as a solution to school overcrowding. The reality is that portable classrooms are critical for many overpopulated and underfunded schools to operate. Consequently, when schools are unable to afford new buildings or extensive renovations, these “temporary” structures become permanent. Studies conducted by institutions including UCLA, The University of Houston, Western University, and the California Department of Health Services reveal that these portables often do not meet adequate standards to foster a productive learning and teaching environment. Furthermore, the antiquated design of the prototypical portable renders it difficult to transport and a financial liability for its schools. This thesis asks, “How might portable classrooms be reinvented to be more adaptable, flexible, and reliable learning environments?” Design parameters will be derived from five “research components”. These parameters will guide a design process to formulate an output that is an architecturally refined, sustainable, and healthy solution which cultivates a more educationally supportive environment for our nation’s youth.
