Who Likes Americans and Who Doesn't: Assessing Effects of Fundamentalism, Liberal Values, and Prosociality on Tunisian Attitudes

Abstract

Abstract A survey experiment assessed effects of religious fundamentalism, liberal values, and prosocial behavior on Tunisian's evaluations of fellow Tunisians and Americans. Participants high in religious fundamentalism and low in liberal values evaluated Tunisian targets more positively than American targets. The finding on liberal values was best accounted for by an explanation based in ethnocentrism, and the finding on fundamentalism by a social identity explanation. Additionally, irrespective of target nationality, participants upgraded targets they viewed as prosocial.
