Abstract

Once a vital ecological and cultural resource, the Anacostia River is now among the nation’s most polluted rivers. The rapid growth of urban areas, centuries of industrial use, loss of wetlands, and aging wastewater infrastructure, have transformed the river from a natural asset to a dividing line within Washington, D.C. The ecological collapse of the river has resulted in geographical barriers, preventing access to healthy ecosystems, equitable development, and public resources for marginalized communities. The problem is both social and environmental. How can architectural and ecological design begin to foster social ties? Conventional wastewater treatment systems are often too expensive and energy-intensive. On the other hand, wetlands offer a low-cost, climate change resilient, and nature-based solution. They also provide social and cultural benefits, such as recreation, education, and overall human well-being. By 2050, 68% of the world’s population is projected to live in urban areas so it’s imperative to implement sustainable solutions. This thesis will investigate urban strategies, looking into how architecture can play a role in place making. This thesis will also integrate case study analysis and examine existing wetland and green infrastructure projects. By combining socially responsive design with ecological infrastructure, this thesis explores transforming urban green planning from a tool of environmental privilege into one that actively bridges communities and dismantles inequalities.
