Urban renewal in mid-twentieth-century America dramatically altered cities, frequently destroying established communities. Large-scale infrastructure projects, especially highways, displaced residents and severed neighborhood ties. This study argues that architecture and urban design can help repair these fragmented communities, enabling them to reclaim space, restore identity, and envision new futures. This research explores the physical, social, and cultural impacts of urban renewal in Baltimore. A striking example is the “Highway to Nowhere,” a 1.4-mile stretch of U.S. Route 40 meant to connect major interstates. The highway displaced over a thousand residents from minority neighborhoods before community opposition stopped its completion, leaving an incomplete expressway. Today, it stands as an urban scar, dividing the community and fostering resentment. Alongside the highway, boarded-up homes, lack of green space, and few gathering places remain. Architecture and urban design can act as catalysts for healing, helping to rebuild spaces of belonging and resilience in West Baltimore.en_US
