The Barrier of Race

Abstract

In this research paper, I explore the conflict of mixed identity as seen through the lens of mixed race that is presented in Nella Larsen's novel "Passing". I believe that "Passing" shows that in the racially discriminatory culture of the United States in the 1930s, it is impossible for a person of black and white heritage to live in both of the races: he or she must choose one race as his or her identity and stick with it.
