Under the oppressive rule of the tyrannical Maern, rightful leader of the people of Nerin, and last of her bloodline, Roisline, is offered a deal by the duplicitous Maern ambassador, Corvinus, to steal into the Maern fort and assassinate the Commander in revenge for the death of her mother. In return, Corvinius plans to appoint his puppet, General Durand, in the incompetent Commander's place and eliminate the only woman with the ability to summon the Old Ones to war against the Maern, with one stroke. While Roisline considers this, she awkwardly befriends a Maern healer, Wuer and tries to distance herself further, from her village and her people. Consequently, Wuer is attacked and Roisline must nurse him to health. Roisline must choose between her people's need for a leader and her own selfish desires for revenge, but with Wuer's friendship, she only feels more conflicted.
