In the 20th century, the urban fabric and place of many American cities was destroyed for the functional and efficient future promised by the automobile. While this has brought about great advancements in mobility and access, this prioritization has resulted in crippling car dependency, worsening conditions for other travel modes and, in some cases, reduced accessibility. A car-centric future makes sustainable development more difficult. As urban mobility evolves, public transit must improve efficiency while remaining accessible, inviting, and activated. While design is only one factor influencing travel behavior, improving the convenience, desirability, and connectivity of public transit can encourage more use. This thesis explores how architecture can: (1) create multi-functional, human-centric public places, (2) remediate damage done by the automobile, and (3) improve the efficiency, convenience, and desirability of public and multi-modal transportation.en_US
