Archaic Man and Technology: Organic Architecture as an Expression of the Primitive Psyche in Modern Time

Abstract

Architecture exists as a re-materialization of nature in nature, through technological innovation. This thesis examines organic architecture as an expression of this phenomenon through explorations in materiality, form, dissolution of form, and placement in the landscape. A five acre site in the community of Bunker Hill in Los Angeles, California is ideal for such an exploration due to its topography, climate, and foliage. The site is north of downtown Los Angeles on the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Figueroa St., adjacent to the Santa Ana and Hollywood Freeways. The master plan for the revitalization of the entire Bunker Hill area includes mixed-use housing and retail. The program will address these aspects of the master plan, as well as an institutional building and community parkscape.
