    Digital Preservation Planning: Choosing Systems

    Archivists from the Pennsylvania State Archives will share how they are managing and prioritizing digital preservation, highlighting the challenges faced in current projects. Although they do not have a preservation system currently in place, they are working towards the procurement of one. Similarly, archivists and librarians at the University of Pennsylvania worked collaboratively on common solutions for digital collections preservation among many silos. They will focus on a pilot project evaluating Preservica and hosted Archivematica, how these systems can be used in receiving, processing, storing born- digital records, and the next steps for a project done completely virtually. Presentations will be followed by a discussion with the panel and audience on digital preservation planning best practices.

    Storage and Technology Obsolescence: Evaluating Digital Preservation Capacity Using the Digital Preservation Capability Maturity Model (DPCMM)

    In this panel presentation, Fatemeh Rezaei, Archivist; Kristin Conlin, Reference and Instruction Librarian; and Laura Bell, Archivist at the University of Baltimore discuss how to convey the importance of a digital preservation program in a data-supported framework that ensures continuous access to digital assets to library administration. An initial assessment using the Digital Preservation Capability Maturity Model (DPCMM) revealed that our library's storage and retention of records were based on individual department standards which were not uniform or implemented with archival principles for storage and retention in mind. In this panel discussion we share our experience using the DPCMM in the Robert L. Bogomolny library at the University of Baltimore, as well as the impact of the results and the departmental conversations that occurred surrounding digital preservation in our library.

    Supporting Solidarity: Appraising and Collecting Online Content Surrounding the Women's Marches in Maryland

    Report and presentation from the MARAC conference in Buffalo, NY on October 28, 2017. S23, "Documenting Social Protest: Lessons Learned from the Women's March." This project took place in the context of an entire course on archival appraisal at the University of Maryland and had powerful implications for archival outreach as activism as well as the tools needed to carry out collection development for born-digital materials. We used Archive-It to crawl social media pages and decided to focus on local solidarity marches in Maryland as the national Women's March was already well-documented. As students, we learned that activism and outreach are integral to the archival profession; we have to be able to explain why we as archivists want to document social protest.
