    PERSONAL TOUCHES: DESIGNING THE COSTUMES FOR ALAN KNEE’S LITTLE WOMEN: THE MUSICAL

    This document is a description of the process of conceiving and implementing the costume design for the University of Maryland’s production of Little Women: The Musical. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s seminal novel, Little Women: The Musical by Alan Knee is an adaptation of the timeless story set during the American Civil War. The production featured a blended contemporary take on 1860s New England. This thesis contains the entirety of the costume design process: from initial concepts to the final product, including research, renderings, fitting photos, and production photos. The show was produced by the University of Maryland, College Park School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies from October 28th- 31st, 2021. The production was directed by Professors Scot Reese and Alvin Mayes, Scenic Design by Sarah Beth Hall, Lighting Design by Michael Winston, and Costume Design by Ashlynne Ludwig.

    MAKING DO: AN EXAMINATION OF HISTORIC POVERTY AND CONTEMPORARY SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THE COSTUME DESIGN OF KURT WEILL’S STREET SCENE

    This document demonstrates a case study of the process of researching, envisioning and producing the costume design for a production with an emphasis on environmental and ethical values in design. The production featured is Street Scene, an opera set in a New York tenement in 1929. The document describes the early collaboration with the director in creating the concept for the piece, how this influenced the research and design and how the design and the designer’s personal values influenced the sourcing and implementation of the design. Included are images documenting the research, renderings, fittings and finished production images. Street Scene was composed by Kurt Weill with libretto by Langston Hughes based on a 1929 play by Elmer Rice. This production was produced by the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland, April 12-20, 2019 under the direction of Professor Amanda Consol, conductor Professor Craig Kier with scenic design by Ryan Fox and lighting design by Peter Leibold.

    Costume Design for Little Shop of Horrors

    This document serves as a description of the design process for the costume design of the University of Maryland’s production of Little Shop of Horrors, which ran from October 4-12, 2018 in the Kay Theatre of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. This production was directed by Ron Himes, guest director to the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. The piece was written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, based on the 1960 film of the same name directed by Roger Corman. The document will describe and discuss all aspects of the process, including initial concept, research, costume renderings, the fitting process, the tech process, and the final product.

    This document details the process of conceiving and executing a costume design for Antigone, a classical Greek tragedy written by Sophocles and adapted by Brendan Kennelly. This production was produced by the University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies and ran from October 6-14, 2017 under the direction of Professor Lisa Nathans.

    Costume Design for The Wild Party

    In this document is a description of the process of conceiving and implementing the costume design for The Wild Party, a 1920s-style musical. Included in the process are the original concept of the designer and how it developed in conjunction with the directors’ needs, and process images including research, renderings, fitting photos, and completed production images. The Wild Party was written by Andrew Lippa, based on the poem by Joseph Moncure March. This production was produced by the University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, November 4-11, 2016, under the direction of Professor Scot Reese and Mr. Alvin Mayes.

It was directed by Lee Mikeska Gardner with the set designed by Halea Coulter and lighting designed by Connor Dreibelbis.

    COSTUME DESIGN FOR L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES

    The purpose of this thesis is explore the artistic concepts, design process and execution of Kate Fulop’s costume design for the Maryland Opera Studio’s production of L’enfant et les sortilèges by Maurice Ravel and score by Collette. L’enfant et les sortilegès opened on April 17th, 2015 in the University of Maryland’s Kay Theatre under the direction of Nicholas Olcott, conducted by Craig Kier, movement by Karin Abromaitis. The design team included set designer April Joy Vester and Lighting design by Brittany Shemuga. This document includes a detailed explanation of the design process including conceptual approach statements, color renderings, revisions and in process, fitting, and production photos. This document will also follow the problem solving and realization process from a paper to design to an actualized design.

    The following thesis explores the core artistic concepts, design process, and execution of Kelsey Hunt's costume design for the Maryland Opera Studio's production of Die Fledermaus. Die Fledermaus opened April 11th, 2014 in the University of Maryland's Kay Theatre. It was directed by Nicholas Olcott with Edward Maclary as conductor and Alcine Wiltz as choreographer. Sets were designed by Paige Hathaway and Lighting was designed by Robert Denton.

    The following thesis documents the costume design process and execution for the production of Rent by Jonathan Larson. Supporting documents included are research, renderings, fabric samples, fitting photographs, and production photos. The Production presented in this paper was produced October 21,2011 at the University of Maryland in the Ina and Jack Kay Theater a six hundred and fifty seat proscenium theatre. Alan Mingo Jr. directed the production, the set was designed by Douglas Clarke, the lighting was designed by Andrew Dorman, the projection design was designed by Jedediah Roe, and the sound was designed by Neil McFadden.

    That Face: A Costume Design

Through written explanation, research, drawings, renderings, fitting and production photos, I will explain how the costume design for That Face was completed. It was produced at Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. The production opened February 21, 2010 and closed March 14, 2010. It was directed by Rahaleh Nassri, set designed by: Luciana Stecconi, lights designed by: Colin Bills, and sound designed by: Elisheba Ittoop.
