This research project investigates community cohesion amidst gentrification in Trinidad, Washington, DC. The research combines literature review, observational analysis, quantitative comparison, expert interviews, and qualitative resident interviews to comprehensively assess the impacts of gentrification on neighborhood social dynamics. Findings reveal a complex interplay of factors, including the displacement of lifetime residents, the erosion of cultural identity and minority-owned businesses, and a notable racial divide between existing Black residents and newcomer White residents. Despite the potential for higher quality amenities, gentrification often leads to the exclusion of original residents from those amenities and disrupts longstanding community ties. This work highlights the importance of diversity of perspectives and emphasizes the need for collaboration between existing communities and urban development entities to achieve more equitable outcomes. Shifts in demographic distribution display the evolving nature of DC’s social landscape. Ultimately, the research contributes valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of gentrification in urban settings, emphasizing the both importance of inclusive and collaborative approaches to urban development, and initiatives taken to allow for greater cohesion between newcomers and existing residents.
