The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve–Maryland (CBNERR-MD), in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, undertook a design research study to develop a new field station at Monie Bay, Princess Anne, Maryland. Drawing on the principles of UMD's award-winning WaterShed (2011 US DOE Solar Decathlon) project, the study sought to establish a model for sustainable, bio-inspired state facilities in coastal areas. Seventeen student teams explored design strategies and technologies aimed at fostering mutually beneficial relationships between the built environment and sensitive estuarine ecosystems. Eight of these projects are presented as case studies, illustrating approaches to key design challenges including water collection, energy use, daylighting, marsh-responsive site planning, and storm preparedness. The findings synthesize a set of guiding principles intended to inform the design and construction of the Monie Bay Field Station and serve as a replicable template for other state-owned coastal facilities facing the pressures of sea level rise and climate change.
