This paper describes and compares an experimental and a numerical method for shape optimization of continuum structures. The experimental method is based on a systematic application of photoelasticity. The numerical method is based on coupling of a finite element analysis and an optimization method. The paper demonstrates the importance of designer's interaction during the shape optimization process. The discussion is made taking shape optimization of a hole in a tall beam as an example.en_US
