Dismantling of the African American Nuclear Family
(2019-02-15) Gebre-Egziabher, Meron; Edwards, Norrell; English
This paper discusses the demolition of the black nuclear family through three different eras of American history including slavery, the great migration, and the current era of mass incarceration caused by the war on drugs and war on crime initiatives from the late 20th century. It aims to explore the many ways that preexisting systems of oppression in America have made it difficult for black families to obtain the ideal family structure and create a stable foundation for their children.

Evolving Techniques in Partial Endothelial Keratoplasty: A Comprehensive Literature Review
(2019-02-15) Ighani, Mehrnaz; Cuffy, Nicole; Behavioral and community health
Individuals with endothelial disorders such as Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy and bullous keratopathy require corneal transplantation of the diseased corneal tissue once their endothelial cell density has decreased significantly. In the past century, penetrating keratoplasty (PK) or full corneal transplantation has been the most widely used procedure to treat endothelial dysfunction. However, endothelial keratoplasty (EK) has replaced PK as it has lower post-operative complications. EK consists of Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) and Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). This study consists of a literature review on the advantages and disadvantages of DMEK and DSEK and their post-operative complications. Patients who undergo the DMEK procedure experience lower rates of graft rejection, more frequent re-bubbling and follow-up appointments, and faster visual recovery period. Patients who undergo the DSEK procedure have higher rates of graft rejection, longer visual recovery period, and less re-bubbling rates and follow-up appointments. Surgical techniques for repairing endothelial dysfunction are evolving, but we need larger long-term studies to prove that new techniques are superior to the current surgical techniques.

The Effects of Climate Change on Mental Health
(2019-02-15) Golden, Steven Jr.; Payne-Sturges, Devon; Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health
This Persuasive Research Essay focuses on the detrimental effects that climate change will have on college student's mental health, specifically here at UMD. College students already experience mental health conditions during their time, however the added environmental impacts caused by climate change such as increasing a person's exposure to extreme weather patterns can increase the prevalence of mental health conditions among college students. This paper addresses environmental health disparities among minority groups and the limitations that many college campuses have, including the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland. This paper proposes a benefit of a freshman environmental group to advocate for climate change awareness and policy change for mental health services. Furthermore, the paper focuses on how to utilize the sustainable precautionary principle in order to destigmatize mental health and increase availability to services and resources. In order to avoid unforeseen and uncontrollable mental health outcomes, this persuasive essay views the environmental crisis through a mental health lens in order to asses the impacts climate change will have on a social, communal, and individual level.

The Role of Adrenergic Intervention on Thoracic and Abdominal Perivascular Adipose Tissue Expansion in Rats with and without Heart Failure
(2019-02-15) Rekhtman, David; Hagberg, James; Shill, Daniel; Kinesiology in the School of Public Health
This paper is the accumulation of library and laboratory research regarding perivascular adipose tissue as it relates to cardiovascular disease and obesity. The study investigated the impact of isoproterenol, a drug known to imitate epinephrine and other stimuli of the sympathetic nervous system, on the expansion rate of fatty tissue in rats. This work may potentially lead to future human clinical trials to reduce obesity and cardiovascular disease prevalence in our population. Without the aid of dozens of scholarly resources, this project would not have been able to come to fruition.

Review of Surgical Outcomes associated with Robotic Assisted Mitral Valve Repair (RMVR)
(2019-02-15) Gadiwalla, Qasim; Friedman, Diana; English
Purpose: There remains concern regarding the efficacy and safety of robotic mitral valve repair (RMVR) for patients with degenerative mitral valve disease. The purpose of this review is to examine how robotic assisted mitral valve repair affects surgical outcomes for patients with degenerative mitral valve disease. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted by examining literature from the US National Library of Medicine database. Literature which examined the surgical outcomes of robotic mitral valve repair (RMVR) and its comparison with conventional mitral valve repair (CMVR) was analyzed and compared. Results: The literature shows consistent surgical outcomes for mortality, morbidity, and mitral valve durability for patients who underwent RMVR. However, cardiopulmonary bypass (CB) and cross clamp (XC) times are significantly longer, hospital stay times are significantly shorter, and the quality of life for patients is significantly higher. Conclusions: RMVR is a safe and effective operation which provides consistent and even superior surgical outcomes for patients with degenerative mitral valve disease. While current research shows acceptable surgical outcomes in a 5 year period, further research into long term valvular durability (>10 years) for patients who underwent RMVR is recommended.
