Item AVISARME: Audio Visual Synchronization Algorithm for a Robotic Musician Ensemble(2012) Berman, David Ross; Chopra, Nikhil; Mechanical Engineering; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)This thesis presents a beat detection algorithm which combines both audio and visual inputs to synchronize a robotic musician to its human counterpart. Although there has been considerable work done to create sophisticated methods for audio beat detection, the visual aspect of musicianship has been largely ignored. With advancements in image processing techniques, as well as both computer and imaging technologies, it has recently become feasible to integrate visual inputs into beat detection algorithms. Additionally, the proposed method for audio tempo detection also attempts to solve many issues that are present in current algorithms. Current audio-only algorithms have imperfections, whether they are inaccurate, too computationally expensive, or suffer from terrible resolution. Through further experimental testing on both a popular music database and simulated music signals, the proposed algorithm performed statistically better in both accuracy and robustness than the baseline approaches. Furthermore, the proposed approach is extremely efficient, taking only 45ms to compute on a 2.5s signal, and maintains an extremely high temporal resolution of 0.125 BPM. The visual integration also relies on Full Scene Tracking, allowing it to be utilized for live beat detection for practically all musicians and instruments. Numerous optimization techniques have been implemented, such as pyramidal optimization (PO) and clustering techniques which are presented in this thesis. A Temporal Difference Learning approach to sensor fusion and beat synchronization is also proposed and tested thoroughly. This TD learning algorithm implements a novel policy switching criterion which provides a stable, yet quickly reacting estimation of tempo. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested on a robotic drummer to verify the validity of the approach. The results from testing are documented in great detail and compared with previously proposed approaches.Item Science in the Public Eye: Communicating and Selling Science Through Images(2012) Gigante, Maria Elena; Fahnestock, Jeanne; English Language and Literature; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)Scientific visuals designed to capture the attention of nonscientist audiences appear everywhere — from magazine covers to Internet blogs, from billboards to the Discovery Channel — and yet they have not received the critical attention they deserve. Situated at the crossroads of the rhetoric of science, communication studies, visual design theory, and the still emerging field of visual rhetoric, this dissertation seeks to shed light on the persuasive function of visuals in communicating science to non-experts. Occupying a grey area between scientific visualizations and art, the visuals used to communicate science to nonscientists should be classified, I argue, as scientific advertisements. Their purpose is to sell a positive and supportive attitude toward science, and since this need for support has existed since the scientific revolution, scientific advertisements have existed in different guises at least since the seventeenth century. Their form, however, differs, depending on the available technology and modes of representation. In this dissertation I explore how such images as frontispieces, portraits, magazine covers, and aestheticized visualizations have contributed to the legitimization of science across temporal and cultural boundaries by influencing public attitudes towards scientists and their research. This project addresses the concern surrounding the public's current disengagement from science by considering whether science can be sold visually in a more responsible way.Item Spirituals And Gospel Music Performance Practice: A Dual Curriculum That Bridges The Cultural Divide(2010) Jefferson, Robert Lee; Mabbs, Linda; Music; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)This study explores methods in which the teaching of Gospel Music and Spirituals can be used as a conduit to bridge ethnic, cultural, and racial divides that are often found in American society. After working with various cultural and racial groups within religious and secular circles, the researcher has observed that individual cultures can have very distinct and opposite approaches to learning music, even in the United States, which some consider to be a cultural "melting pot." More specifically, there are cultures that embrace the written or visual learning tradition, while others lean more heavily toward the aural or oral learning tradition. As a result, the perceived differences deriving from these two opposite learning traditions can often create both unconscious and conscious divisions among various cultural and ethnic groups. However, using teaching techniques and performance practices related to both Gospel Music and Spirituals (which use different although related learning approaches), one can create an opportunity to bridge the gap between the aural and visual learning traditions and can create an environment ripe for intra-cultural and cross-cultural communication. This dissertation studied two separate groups of individuals; one group from the visual cultural learning tradition and one group from the aural cultural learning tradition. Both groups were taught music through the process of either an aural or visual process (or in some cases, by a combination of both), and their behavioral responses were observed during rehearsals. The results of these observations are used to create an outline for curricular approaches to teaching groups from opposing learning traditions, utilizing the opportunity that this presents not only to bridge the divide which often exists between individuals from different learning traditions, but also to offer a way to address ethnic and cultural divides.
