    The University of Maryland Libraries WikiProject: Challenges and Delights

    In June 2020, members of what is now the Cataloging & Metadata Services team launched a project to begin exploring Wikidata, a free and open knowledge base of structured data. Over the next two and a half years, almost two dozen participants created and edited 1,492 Wikidata items related to 1,294 collections from SCUA and SCPA. In the process, UMD's Wikidata editors got to know our special collections, explored a linked data interface, and made library resources more discoverable by users on the open web. This panel features four project participants, who will provide an introduction to the editing project and share some of the challenges, delights, and historical backstories they discovered while working on Wikidata.

    Uncovering Hidden Datasets in DRUM

    DRUM has been available for UMD researchers to deposit research data since the mid-2000's but little mediation or curation has been performed on these materials to date. As the Libraries begin planning for a new collection within DRUM specifically for research data, the authors wondered how much research data had been deposited in DRUM as a supplemental file to an article, paper, or ETD rendering the data "hidden" from searches within DRUM. This poster presents two methodologies for querying records in DRUM, analyzing metadata to discover hidden datasets, and outlining the next steps for improving research data archiving and preservation in DRUM.

    The benefits of library involvement in the implementation of a faculty activity reporting system

    Many universities have implemented software programs, such as Digital Measures and Faculty180, to manage faculty productivity and research information. This implementation process involves a number of different stakeholders, including IT, institutional reporting, research administration, faculty, etc. In many cases, an implementation team is assembled to bring together the right expertise. We advocate for the inclusion of the Libraries on that implementation team based primarily on our experience with Digital Measures at the University of Maryland, but also on communication with other institutions who have been through a similar process and a review of the literature. This poster will enumerate the benefits of library involvement, recommend points in the process at which to get involved (e.g. procurement, technical implementation, training), and identify the best people in a library organization to include at those moments, such as metadata experts or graduate assistants for training. We will also provide suggestions for librarians who need to make the case for inclusion, and address a few challenges to full participation. The poster format will allow us to present the information based on a visual timeline, which will make it easy for interested attendees to take our experience and apply it at their own institutions. We will also be able to spend time discussing our experience one-on-one with attendees to answer questions and learn from their experiences.

    Transforming external legacy metadata for ArchivesSpace: A labor of love

    When the AFL-CIO collection was acquired, University of Maryland Libraries received a database export of all the metadata associated with the materials. While we already had a proven process for transforming our local metadata from our migration from The Beast (Access Database) into ArchivesSPace, this process would not apply, as the metadata in the case of AFL-CIO was given to us in a different format. In this presentation I will outline the challenges of transforming the metadata and describe the transformation workflows. Specifically, I will show the tool (Stead) that was modified and used for the majority of the transformation work, as well as review the other steps, tips, and tools I utilized to format the metadata for optimal import into ArchivesSpace.
