Item The Effects of Climate Change on Mental Health(2019-02-15) Golden, Steven Jr.; Payne-Sturges, Devon; Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental HealthThis Persuasive Research Essay focuses on the detrimental effects that climate change will have on college student's mental health, specifically here at UMD. College students already experience mental health conditions during their time, however the added environmental impacts caused by climate change such as increasing a person's exposure to extreme weather patterns can increase the prevalence of mental health conditions among college students. This paper addresses environmental health disparities among minority groups and the limitations that many college campuses have, including the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland. This paper proposes a benefit of a freshman environmental group to advocate for climate change awareness and policy change for mental health services. Furthermore, the paper focuses on how to utilize the sustainable precautionary principle in order to destigmatize mental health and increase availability to services and resources. In order to avoid unforeseen and uncontrollable mental health outcomes, this persuasive essay views the environmental crisis through a mental health lens in order to asses the impacts climate change will have on a social, communal, and individual level.Item Endocrine Disruptors and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in the United States: An Environmental, Health, and Financial Crisis(2017-02-03) Kachemov, Zachariah; Payne-Sturges, Devon; ; School of Public Health: Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental HealthEndocrine disruptors are a dangerous class of chemicals found in many household products that continue to endanger the United States' public health, environment, and economy. These household products range from plastic toys, detergents, to flame retardants, yet the public lacks common knowledge of their various potential serious effects. One group of endocrine disruptors in particular, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, create a greater sense of alarm in the United States as they are still being used as flame retardants in a vast amount of everyday products. In order for a decrease in endocrine disruptors production and use, the Environmental Protection Agency and its Toxic Control Act need to enforce greater regulatory laws.Item The True Price of Cool(2016-02-15) Salvacion, Joan Kate; Devon, Payne-Sturges; Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental HealthWhat is the true price we are paying to stay cool? In this case, we are not referring to the "cool" established by social society, but the air-cooling systems we use on a daily basis. The purpose of this paper is to extend, persuade, and present the various evidence available regarding the negative effects of air conditioning not only on one's personal health, but the environment as well. The research presented is not necessarily a call to end air conditioning in our societies but potentially to raise awareness of environmental sustainability methods and the importance of the moderate use of resources available to us. Questions that are presented are (a) What negative health effects, personally and environmentally, does air conditioning/heating appliances have? (b) What positive health effects does air conditioning/heating appliances have? and (c) How can we become better or safe consumers?
