THE ONLY CONSTANT IS CHANGE: Adapting for the E-resources Environment
(2018-05-03) Saponaro, Maggie; DePope, Leigh Ann; O'Neal, Kelley
This presentation discussed the on-going e-resources review process implemented at the University of Maryland College Park. The University of Maryland Libraries (UMD), has experienced a static collection budget for over 15 years. In the fall of 2015, the Libraries initiated its first-ever comprehensive e-resources review process to address the current budget situation as well as plan for the future. The process started with a comprehensive database review, evolved into a serials review the following year, and continues to be adapted for each subsequent e-resource review process. The presenters described the process used to develop the review procedures, discussed how decisions were made and communicated, and highlighted the experience of a subject specialist librarian with the process.

BTAA Geoportal: An update on collections, metadata, and interface design
(2017-10-10) Piekielek, Nathan; Martindale, Jaime; O'Neal, Kelley
The Big Ten Academic Alliance Geoportal provides discoverability and facilitates access to geospatial resources curated by librarians and geospatial specialists at twelve participating research institutions. Since the geoportal’s initial launch in the summer of 2016, steady progress has been made to enhance discovery and access to over 5,000 geospatial datasets and scanned maps. Throughout the last year, project working groups have focused on collection development, metadata coordination, and interface design. This work has included augmenting collections and identifying gaps, streamlining metadata workflows, and performing usability testing to help identify interface design improvements. This presentation provides a series of updates from the working groups and will offer a look to the future as we address project growth and strategic planning efforts.

A Multi-institutional Geoportal to Enhance Geospatial Data Discoverability and Increase Accessibility
(2016-03) O'Neal, Kelley; Parker, Bria; Kong, Nicole; Mattke, Ryan
Geospatial data and methodologies are becoming increasingly popular in fields beyond Geography. The exponential increase in geospatial data sets available to users and varied platforms on which they are served can make data searches difficult and leave some data undiscovered, particularly for users with more limited knowledge of geospatial data sources. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), which provides unique opportunities for and supports collaborative efforts among Big Ten member universities plus the University of Chicago, initiated the CIC Geospatial Data Discovery Project to enhance geospatial data discoverability and access among member institutions. Nine of the fifteen institutions have come together to develop and populate a geoportal for use by all member institutions. GeoBlacklight was identified as the best architecture option for the geoportal due to its open-source platform, strong development community and documentation, intuitive interface, and easy metadata integration. Institutions have developed workflows for identifying candidate geospatial datasets and harvesting and converting associated metadata records. Selected datasets include substantial state-specific geospatial data holdings along with georeferenced map collections. The collaborative nature of this project serves to reduce workload among individual institutions, simply workflow, encourage communication between institutions, and increase geospatial data collections for each institution.
