Item The Indistinct Edge: Reconnecting Experience in Nature and Architecture(2016) Bender, Matthew David; Abrams, Michael; Architecture; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)This thesis explores how architectures sense of place is rooted in the natural environment. The built environment has been constructed to protect and sustain human culture from the weathering of nature. Separating experience from the natural environment removes a sense of place and belonging in the natural and reinforces architectural dominance. This separation distinguishes the natural world as an article of spectacle and gives the human experience an unnatural voyeurship to natural changes. By examining the fusion of architectural and natural edges this thesis analyzes how the human experience can reconnect with a naturalistic sense of place through architecture, blending the finite edge where architecture maintains nature, and adapting buildings to the cycles of the environment. Removing dominance of man-made spaces and replacing them with the cohabitation of the edge between built and natural forms.Item Threshold: Baltimore's Post-Industrial Edge(2011) Shockley, Allison Lea; Ambrose, Michael A; Architecture; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)Working simultaneously at multiple scales, this thesis focuses on the process of making, a process of iterative spatial studies and the making of integrated scales of threshold between city and water. At the urban scale, a rich and layered threshold condition between city and water, public and private, and integral movement systems reconnects the city of Baltimore, Maryland with its post-industrial edge along South Clinton Street. At the community, campus, and building scales, an integration of film making, viewing and education creates a threshold between residential and industrial functions of the site. At the detail scale, material and specific connections enhance the concept and experience of threshold. Technology advancements during the twentieth century expanded industrial ports and the city of Baltimore, though subsequently caused a physical disconnection between city and water. As industry moves away, the opportunity to reconnect post-industrial cities to the water's edge is ineluctable.Item MUSIC ON THE EDGE: An Addition to the Music Conservatory of Tolima, Colombia(2005-05-20) Benavides, Juan Gabriel; Schumacher, Thomas L; Architecture; Digital Repository at the University of Maryland; University of Maryland (College Park, Md.)The Conservatory is a historically significant cultural institution that gives the region of Tolima cultural identity and pride. The current physical setting of the school does not coincide with the stature of this organization. Located on a site near the cliff of the downtown district of Ibagué, the capital of Tolima, the Conservatory has potential for a great view of adjacent topography. The site with my proposed development offers the following issues for consideration: the relationship of Ibagué's urban fabric to areas with steep topography and the architectural expression of an institution of lofty aspirations. While creating a new edge, and providing the city with places to enjoy the view, the addition will complement existing buildings with installations well suited for the teaching of music, primary and secondary schools. Both Urban and architectural scales of design critically assess current development that is dilapidating Ibagué's urban quality.
