Pinstripes, Pajamas, and Vanilla Ice Cream: An Exploration 1930s Fashion Through "She Loves Me"

Abstract

This document details the costume design process for She Loves Me, written by JoeMasteroff, with music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Based on the 1937 play Parfumerie by Miklós László, She Loves Me centers on the employees of Maraczek’s Parfumiere during the 1930s. The University of Maryland’s production stayed true to the original 1930s setting, with the costume design focusing on period inspiration, telling a color story through the seasons, and incorporating influences of perfume bottles into the details of the costuming. The University of Maryland’s School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies produced this show from October 18th to 25th, 2025. The production was directed by Nick Martin, with contributions from Sophia Tepermeister in scenic design, Mariah Faulkner in lighting design, Doni Rotunno in costume design, Samuel Crawford in sound design, Priscilla Bruce in wig design, Amber Daniels in choreography, and Marci Shegouge in music direction. The stage management team was led by Heather Hernandez, with support from assistant stage managers Chiso Obichere and Amelia du Bois. This thesis provides a thorough look at the costume design process from initial concept to the final on-stage product, including research, renderings, supporting documentation, fitting photos, and production photos.
