This workshop was given at the Maryland Humanities Summer Institute 2026, presented by the Frederick Douglass Center for Leadership Through the Humanities. The workshop explored approaches to uncovering marginalized histories in archives. Evangeline and Manuel introduced the concepts of archival silencing–the suppression of certain voices from the mainstream record–and reparative archiving–acknowledging these failures and engaging in conscious actions toward wholeness–through a brief presentation. Then they led the workshop attendees in a hands-on investigation of archival materials. After training on how to handle and examine items, participants reviewed documents from the University of Maryland University Archives, searching for evidence of marginalized narratives. The workshop centered on archival dissent–rejecting the dominant paradigm and resisting silence–reflecting the Institute's 2026 theme of "dissent". Fifteen people participated.
