Discussions of sustainability have become increasingly common in recent times, as there has been a growing concern for the impact of the built environment on the ecological state of the planet. As we experiment with alternate energy sources, long- term development plans, and waste reduction techniques, new materials and design approaches are emerging. A synthesis of these discussions, this thesis examines how green buildings work in urban environments through the development of a museum and research center on sustainability for Washington, DC, that is itself, environmentally friendly. Utilizing and displaying green building systems, this public museum will teach the design profession as well as individuals through its exhibits and assembly. This learning machine will focus on the generality of sustainability, and the specifics of sustainable architecture.en_US
