    Abstract
Design optimization problems are typically characterized by a large number of inequality constraints, many of them satisfied as equalities at the optimum. To take advantage of this tact, we have used an augmented Lagrangian approach together with monotonicity analysis to optimize the design of spur gear sets. Two examples are included: namely, minimizing the pinion diameter of a gear set and minimizing the weight of a gear reducer.
