Abstract

This document is a description of the process of conceiving and implementing the costume design for the University of Maryland’s production of Little Women: The Musical. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s seminal novel, Little Women: The Musical by Alan Knee is an adaptation of the timeless story set during the American Civil War. The production featured a blended contemporary take on 1860s New England. This thesis contains the entirety of the costume design process: from initial concepts to the final product, including research, renderings, fitting photos, and production photos. The show was produced by the University of Maryland, College Park School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies from October 28th- 31st, 2021. The production was directed by Professors Scot Reese and Alvin Mayes, Scenic Design by Sarah Beth Hall, Lighting Design by Michael Winston, and Costume Design by Ashlynne Ludwig.
