Abstract
Optical therapeutic (OT) devices, which range in applications from laser tissue ablation and surgery to photodynamic (PDT) and low-level laser therapies (LLLT), are assessed for safety and efficacy on the basis of Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE), which measures radiation dose in J/cm<super>2</super>, delivered to the target area as well as surrounding tissues. We present the characterization of an imaging system for, and method of, determining the maximum dose of devices capable of delivering peak energy level to sub-surface tissue layers. This method utilizes a fiber optic based imaging system designed to allow for comparability across laser parameters, tissue sample type and layer thickness.
