    MEN ON BOATS: A DESIGN EXPEDITION TO BRING THE NATURAL WONDERS OF THE GRAND CANYON TO THE STAGE A SCENIC DESIGN

    This thesis describes the scenic design process for the University of Maryland’s production of Men on Boats by Jaclyn Backhaus. Men on Boats was directed by KenYatta Rogers and Elena Velasco. This production was produced by the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies within the College of Arts and Humanities at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in the Ina & Jack Kay Theatre. The following materials in this thesis were used as tools to convey the scenic design to the directors, fellow design collaborators, production team members, production shops, crew members, and actors: research images, sketches, photographs of ¼” scale color neutral and color models, drafting packet, paint elevations, a properties list, a properties book. Also included in this thesis are production photographs and written reflections of the entire process - from page to stage.

    THE PROM: A SCENIC DESIGN

    The purpose of this thesis is to provide a record for the scenic design process for The Prom, a musical by Matthew Sklar, Chad Beguelin, and Bob Martin, produced at the University of Maryland – College Park by the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. This thesis contains documentation for the scenic design and production process for this performance. These documents serve as the foundation of this scenic design. Each element was used to communicate design ideas and technical specifications to the director, other designers, and craftspeople involved in this production. Included are research images, photographs of ¼” scale models, drafting plates, paint elevations, a properties list and a properties book detailing furniture and hand props, along with a final reflection of the scenic design and production process.

    SPRING AWAKENING THE MUSICAL A SCENIC DESIGN

    The purpose of this thesis is to provide research, supporting paperwork, production photographs, and other materials that document the scenic design process for the production of Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening the musical by the University of Maryland- College Park, School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies. This thesis contains the following: research images collected to develop and communicate ideas about forms, color, texture, locations, proportion, mood, and historical references to the production team; preliminary sketches, preliminary renderings, and photographs of the ¼" scale color models used to convey the scenic design; a unit list providing detailed information of each scenic element; a drafting packet, painter's elevations, paint research images and a greenery research packet to communicate the look of each scenic element to the technical director and paint charge; and a properties list and a properties research packet detailing each prop used in the production. Archival production photographs are included.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: Hotel Cassiopeia Daniel da Cruz Pinha, Master of Fine Arts, 2010 Directed By: Associate Professor, Daniel Conway, Department of Theatre The purpose of this thesis is to provide a record of the scenic design process for Hotel Cassiopeia by Charles Mee, produced by the University of Maryland Department of Theatre and performed in the Kogod Theatre at University at Maryland and at the Roundhouse Theatre in Silver Spring, M.D. The attached package contains all the elements that were used during the development process and ideas of the scenic design for the play. It includes the visual aspects such as research images, renderings, pictures of the model, technical drafting, and photographs of the performance. The material was used to create a communication among the set designer, Daniel Pinha, director, designers and the shops. Hotel Cassiopeia is a play by Charles Mee based on the American artist Joseph Cornell. The abstract set evokes his work environment, the basement, where he stored and assembled the found objects collected for years. The set is comprised of a strong visual image to honor the main character of the play, the visual artist, Joseph Cornell

    The purpose of this thesis is to document and analyze the process of the scenic design for William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, as it was produced at the University of Maryland's Department of Theatre in March of 2005. The role of a scenic designer as a member of a design and production team is to support the conceptual vision of a stage director. Chapter One of the thesis document presents a script analysis for The Taming of the Shrew. Chapter Two reviews the scenic designer's process of visual research as an integral component of the theatrical design process. This research is conducted in collaboration with the stage director, costume and lighting designer. Chapter Three details each step of the execution of the scenic design. Chapter Four completes the thesis with an analysis of the set designer's process. The appendices include the visual research sources used, photographs of the realized setting, as well as all relevant graphical documents created by the scenic designer to facilitate the completion of the set design.
