Item MCKELDIN MERGED DESK REPORT(2014-03-28) Patterson, Karen; Hammett, Kevin; Edwards, Jamie; Carson, Chamisa; Luckert, Yelena; Hackman, TimothyIn December 2013, the Public Services Managers charged the McKeldin Merged Desk Subgroup to assist with the planning for a single service point on the first floor of McKeldin Library. The group was to review the operations of the Circulation, Information and TLC Tech Desks and produce a report that included the following: - Recommendations for a service model at the 1st-floor service desk. - Develop complete schedules for all suggested models, as if we were implementing them. - Do we need a separate TLC? - What is the role of librarians at the desk(s)? - What are the training needs for staff at each desk (dependent on the service model recommended above)? The appendices section contains the charge. The report was due to Yelena Luckert, and Tim Hackman by Friday, March 28, 2014. The charge was revised in January 2014 to focus the report on the new desk scheduled for 2015/2016. Initially, the members of the group were to also look at the merged desk for the first floor after a redesign/construction on the Access Services Desk. It was decided that the Access Services Desk would not have a redesign or construction.Item Diversity and Inclusion at UMD Libraries Survey Results(2015) Chadley, Otis; Edwards, Jamie; Epps, Sharon; Garritano, Jeremy; Horbal, Andrew; McDonald, Celina Nichols; Sorrell, Cynthia; Tchangalova, Nedelina; Wheeler, LisaThe Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC) conducted a Diversity Climate Assessment Survey in order to assess the diversity health of the University of Maryland Libraries. The survey was initially conducted for three weeks in July-August, 2014 and re-activated, per Dean Steele’s instructions, for another week in September to get as good a view of diversity issues in the Libraries as possible. This DAC snapshot reports findings on how library faculty, staff and student workers perceive the current state of diversity and inclusion within the Libraries. It also provides information about what organizational changes, training, and programs will be most beneficial to the library staff.Item The ABCS of Strategic Assessment: Building Blocks for Creating a New Plan in Challenging Times(2015-06-28) Gammons, Rachel; Edwards, Jamie; Conlin, Kristin; Barnachea, LuLu; Singh, MadhuThe University of Maryland Libraries embarked on a journey to create a new assessment plan while a leadership transition loomed and campus budget cuts promised new priorities. The Libraries needed to harness its many assessment activities into a strategic coordinated program. The foundation of the new program derives from key building blocks: research, stakeholder engagement, best practices, skills and resources, and integration with strategic planning. To support this growth, the Libraries created a new model for developing assessment capacity: Assess-Build-Cultivate (ABC). The ABC model defines how the Libraries will identify their needs for assessment skills and resources, build their capacity, and cultivate a culture of strategic assessment. Building the new plan and program from the ground up required extensive collaboration inside and outside the organization. The Libraries formed a task force to coordinate this work and recommend how assessment can be deeply integrated into both everyday work and the organization’s strategic planning cycle. The results of the task force’s internal and external research revealed a dire need for coordination, training, and resources. The task force recommended best practices, a new assessment development plan, and the framework for a strategic assessment plan—to be evaluated soon by library management and staff. These building blocks represent what a library in a challenging environment can potentially do moving from limited resources and rapidly changing priorities to the promise of a new vision supported by assessment. The poster will provide charts of the team’s research and figures illustrating the ABC model and strategic framework.
