------------------- GENERAL INFORMATION ------------------- 1. Title of Dataset: A Radiation Belt Content Index Derived from SAMPEX PET Observations During CME and CIR Driven Geomagnetic Storms 2. Author Information: Pricipal Investigator Contact Information: Name: Kyle R. Murphy Institution: University of Maryland Email: krmurphy@umd.edu -------------------------- SHARING/ACCESS INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Licenses/restrictions placed on the data: CC BY-NC 2. Links/relationships to ancillary data sets: NASA CDAWeb (https://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.html/). 3. Was data derived from another source? The radiation belt content index found here was derived from the SAMPEX PET 1.5-6 MeV electron flux avaiable for download at NASA's CDAWeb (https://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.html/). --------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW --------------------- 1. File List: A. Filename: rbc.sav IDL save file of the SAMPEX derived RBC. The file contains a structure (rbc) containing the RBC and timestamps. The RBC and timestamps are also store in variables rbc_n and rbc_t for non IDL users. The RBC has units of number of electrons. The timestamp is stored as the number of seconds since 1970. The save file can be opened with IDL, Matlab, and Python (using SciPy). B. Filename: Storm_list.txt A list of the geomagnetic storms used in the analysis of the SAMPEX radiation belt content. From left to right the columns are, storm type (CME or CIR), start time of the storm, and end time of the storm. 2. Relationship between files: Storm_list.txt has the start and end times of the geomagnetic storms which the RBC is derived for in rbc.sav. 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: A description of the calculation of the RBC can be found in Baker et al. [2004]. Baker, D. N., Kanekal, S. G., & Blake, J. B. (2004). Characterizing the Earth’s outer Van Allen zone using a radiation belt content index. Methods for processing the data: A description of the calculation of the RBC can be found in Baker et al. [2004]. Baker, D. N., Kanekal, S. G., & Blake, J. B. (2004).
